The St. Croix Historical Society was founded in Calais in 1954, prompted by the donation of the land and buildings of Dr. Job Holmes by grand-niece Josephine Moore. Since that date, the SCHS has been working to foster connections between the generations that have passed and those that share the present by sponsoring community events in the St. Croix region. The Holmes Cottage opens during the summer time, enabling residents and visitors to explore the restored 19th century doctor's office (built around 1804) at no charge.
